John Wells:
Woodturner and Carver

I am a woodturner, carver, and furniture maker living in Boulder Creek, nestled among the redwoods, oaks, and madrones of the San Lorenzo Valley. I have been an elementary school teacher and stay-at-home dad. I read, mountain bike, scuba dive, hike, and I volunteer to teach woodturning in the middle school woodshop my son teaches. I work in a studio shop on the same nine acres where I built my family’s house after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

After finishing the house (well almost), I decided to try woodwork as a profession and quickly settled on wood turning and carving as my passions.  Personal referrals brought me all the business I could handle for 30 years.  I have turned poles for spiral staircases 15’ long, columns 12’ x 22”, bowls 44” in diameter, chess pieces ½” tall, and everything in between. Some of my columns sit in the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  I have produced spiral, octagonal, and carved posts, balusters and rail fittings. An interesting niche is the series of candle stands and communion sets I have designed and executed for local churches.

Now retired from architectural work, I am currently president of the Santa Cruz Woodturners Association.  I am concentrating on one-of-a-kind turned and carved vessels and carvings in the round. I am enthralled with wood: the warmth of the colors, the textures, the myriad grain patterns, even the smells (each wood has its own.)  I enjoy sharing and collaborating with other artists and craftspeople.  I revel in the chance to express my creative passions unfettered by the needs and desires of others and by functional design constraints.
